I recently tagged along with Jo Cordell-Cooper to the Hobart Aquatic Centre where she ran an aqua bootcamp class. Now I can testify first hand that Jo has been in the Health & Fitness industry for many years as she was my high school PE teacher 14 years ago!
I used to think Aqua classes were pretty tame until I watched Jo’s class, it certainly adjusted my thinking and I now have a new appreciation for the workout.
I chatted with Jo to find out more about her business, Active Solutions & Health Network.
What made you first start Active Solutions & Health Network?
The original intention of ASHN was more around Health and Wellbeing in the workplace, but after the birth of my third child which co-incided with the Global Financial Crisis I decided the timing was not right to pursue this. I decided to start taking aqua aerobics classes (I’d previously specialised in this) as I’d been asked to become the Industry Trainer and Assessor for the Polytechnic in this area. I had completed my PT qualifications and picking up PT clients seem to come quite easily. I diversified into land based fitness and about 4 years ago decided to focus on Women’s fitness and health. I’ve specialised in water based exercise classes for those who are pregnant and land based classes after baby is born. I also run high intensity aqua bootcamp sessions twice a week, as well as home based PT and group PT classes in Lindisfarne.
How long has ASHN been around?
I’ve been running ASHN for about 5 years now, and it gets a stronger following each and every year!
What do you like most about working in the fitness industry?
Learning! As many of my services fall into the rehab space I’m always learning about new medical conditions and best ways to improve the movement of my clients
What services do you offer?
I offer exercise classes both before and after baby is born
Aqua bootcamp, aqua gymstick, shallow and deep water aqua (all different)
Water based PT (for those in a rehab scenario usually)
Land based PT, 1 on 1 and small group (max 4 on 1)
I’m really particular about followup – each PT clients receives weekly followup so that each session is designed to meet their needs and move them forward physically
What’s your number 1 health & fitness tip?
Do what you love! And lift your pelvic floor rather than brace your core (the fitness industry has had this wrong for a long time :))
Be sure to chat to Jo at the expo and find out more about her upcoming classes.
