When I first went to Bikram Yoga I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. My friends had raved about it but the idea of exercising in 40 degree heat just didn’t sound fun to me! Luckily I have very persistent friends and they eventually got me along. It was so different to anything I had ever done before. It was a mix of emotions as the heat got to me and I battled with my non flexible body trying to coordinate itself into positions I had never tried before. The effects, however were amazing! I would leave with a real sense of accomplishment. I would fight my urge to run out the hot room into the cool air but once the time was over and I left I was so glad I had gone. I would always feel exhausted, yet refreshed. I found Bikram personally helped me to increase my flexibility and even shed some weight.
Now those were back in the days when Bikram Yoga Tasmania was located in New Town but this week I had the pleasure of checking out their new Studio in Bathurst Street, right in the heart of Hobart.
There is such a positive vibe when you walk in to the open, welcoming venue with friendly staff ready to greet you.
A true credit to Ben and his team, the new venue looks amazing and it is easy to see they have put a lot of themselves into the renovations. While relocating from their New Town venue to the new Hobart space Anna and Ben had a young son at home and their second child on the way! Now juggling two young boys and a 7 day a week studio it is easy to see that Yoga is a real passion of theirs and they have created a family friendly environment with the introduction of childminding between 9:15am and 11:15am on weekdays.
I sat down with owners Anna and Ben Korkmaz to find out more about Bikram Yoga Tasmania.

What kind of person can benefit from Bikram Yoga?
How long is a piece of string?! The wonderful thing about Bikram yoga is that it is a beginner’s class and suitable for both advanced yoga practitioners or someone who has never done a yoga pose in their life!
The best thing about this series of yoga asanas is that the postures are all within a person’s normal range of motion. So we’re not going to ask you to stand on your head or do the splits. It is a beginner’s class that is suitable for so many people, young or old.
At Bikram Yoga Tasmania we promote overall health and wellbeing. So, for some, the yoga aids with joint mobility and flexibility. For others, it may be finding relaxation or improving their sleep cycle. Other benefits include improved circulation, renewed energy, relief of chronic pain, faster recovery time from injuries, and even losing a few kilos.
Bikram yoga ultimately helps your body to function at its best, which results in lots of happy, healthy yogis.
What made you get into the health & fitness industry?
We both had injuries and struggled with mental clarity! We knew after starting Bikram yoga that it was something we had to share with others, because the changes we experienced were so great. Our list of injuries ranged from severe sciatica to bouts of depression. Once we began practicing this particular series of yoga asanas in the heat, we noticed that we were happier, calmer, and our bodies started to work. We knew this was something we were going to be doing for the rest of our lives.
How did Bikram Yoga Tasmania start?
We have both always been interested in staying fit and healthy, and enjoyed our regular Bikram yoga practice. It wasn’t until 2010 when we saw a need for a great Bikram yoga studio in Hobart, that we seriously started to think about opening one of our own. We opened our first studio in October 2010 in New Town and in March 2014 we relocated to a purpose-built facility in Bathurst Street. It takes a tremendous amount of love, sweat and tears to open a studio – and it’s been worth every bit! It’s been over four years now and we are constantly improving our studio and developing our teaching skills and knowledge. We just knew we had to share this incredible yoga with others because we had both experienced amazing benefits from it ourselves. We had to let people in on our secret!
What’s your number 1 health & fitness tip?
Find something you love doing so that you can be consistent with it. Whether it is yoga, running, swimming or tai chi, if you want to see changes happen, be consistent with your activity. It may only be once or twice a week, but make sure you commit to that weekly activity and ENJOY it!
You can join the team from Bikram Yoga Tasmania for a Yoga session at 2pm at the expo. Bring your mat if you have one and comfortable clothing you can move freely in.
