This week I had the opportunity to check out Ice Skating Tasmania in Glenorchy. It had been a few years since I last ventured onto the Ice but I remember enjoying it thoroughly when spending days here during the school holidays as a kid.
It was a great surprise to see the mix of age groups participating while I was there; from children as young as 6 to adults enjoying a skate on a Friday afternoon.
The centre offers a fun family day out with a games centre including Pool table and Foosball table sectioned off from the ice so you can keep warm while not skating but with a clear view of the rink so parents can keep an eye on their children.
I sat down with Janina to find out more about the centre.
When did Ice Skating Tasmania first start?
The current rink opened its doors in 1980 but my family were involved in ice skating a few years before that.
What activities do you offer?
We offer Learn to Skate programs for all ages, private coaching, figure skating sessions, public sessions, synchronised skating, guest coaching and workshops, testings, State competitions, local competitions, ice hockey developmental programs, ice hockey training, ice hockey matches and holiday programs. The rink is used by many school groups (local and interstate) who incorporate ice skating and ice hockey into their physical education programs and as part of their excursion itineraries.
What ages and abilities do you cater for?
We cater for all ages – 1 to 100! We encourage everyone to have a go and provide skating aides (in the form of penguins and frames) for those that are a little reluctant and not so sure!
What advice do you have to anyone thinking of trying Ice Skating for the first time?
Don’t let fear dictate your next move….ice skating is not hard and we do have coaches available that can ‘steer’ you in the right direction. You will never know unless you give it a go!!
What’s your number 1 health & fitness tip?
Eat clean and skate clean.
You can find out more about the centre and it’s opening times at http://www.iceskatingtasmania.com.au and of course be sure to pop by their stall at the expo.
