As I entered Stomp Fitness it was looking particularly spooky as they prepare for a Halloween themed open day this Saturday.
Stomp is a whole new concept for fitness in Hobart and I was excited to see just how much fun participants were having while working up a serious sweat.
I caught up with Director, Carmen Jenkins to find out what Stomp Fitness is all about.
Tell us about Stomp Fitness
Stomp Fitness is the only gym of it’s kind in Australia to combine video gaming technology and commercial fitness in an engaging mind-body workout. All of our group fitness is a video game, and much of our cardio equipment has been integrated into video games too. But we also have a great range of strength training equipment for people who just like to lift heavy stuff!
Our pricing is very affordable. We don’t do joining fees, exit fees or lock-in contracts. You pay by the week, and that’s it. Prices start from $11pw to $25pw depending on which equipment you’d like access to.
Do people need a certain fitness level to participate?
All bodies, all ages, all levels of ability (and indeed some levels of disability) can Stomp. Our youngest member is 4, our eldest is 67. Players choose their own level of intensity in this game, so if you’re just up for some fun or if you really want to get fit, Stomping is for you. The games can be cleverly adapted to cater for people who have preexisting health conditions.
What made you get into the health & fitness industry?
The three Directors of Stomp just want people to move and have fun doing it! Two of the three of us ‘recovering overweighties’. We know better than anyone that moving makes you feel good. The better you feel, the better you WANT to feel, so exercise plays a huge role in sustainable weight-loss and overall good health. Now, we’re just passionate about helping people to find a way to enjoy exercise and to keep doing it. That’s why we’ve come up with the catchphrase, ‘No more boring workouts!’ When people join Stomp, we’re redefining their beliefs about what a ‘gym’ is. You won’t see instructors with 2% body fat screaming at members in front of the class at Stomp Fitness. At Stomp, we want to support everyone to achieve their own personal goals for good health.
How did Stomp Fitness start?
Stomp Fitness has evolved over a decade. Our CEO, Brett Young discovered ‘gamified fitness’ while he was living in Finland. When he returned to his native Tasmania, he brought the first Stomp system with him. Trading as Xsite, stomping grew in popularity in Hobart before finally taking the step into our own dedicated gym. Now open on Liverpool Street, Hobart, Stomp offers group fitness, personal training, strength training, gamified cardio machines and lots of prototypes being developed all the time. Our aim is to take Stomp Fitness to the world!
What’s your number 1 health & fitness tip?
The best exercise is the one you keep doing! Find something you love and do it, then do it again!
If you would like to give Stomp Fitness a go they have an open day this Saturday 1st of November from 12-6pm. 1st Floor, 69 Liverpool Street. There will be half price memberships available on the day and prizes to be won.
If you miss the open day, don’t worry Stomp will be showing off their moves at the expo.
