Last week I was lucky enough to sit down with the super fit Jemina and Jay from Tasmanian Road Runners.
Tasmanian Road Runners is a great new initiative started right here in Hobart for runners all over Tasmania.
We chatted all things running, how Tasmanian Road Runners came to be and what it’s all about.
What made you start Tasmanian Road Runners?
The idea came about because we love running and everything about it – the sense of personal achievement, the freedom, the people you meet. We also realised that there was no central place where runners could go to find information on recreational running in Tasmania. Our goal is to increase participation in running, centralise and increase access to running-related resources and opportunities, encourage greater involvement in active-lifestyles, and improve community health and well-being.
Is it just for professional runners?
TRR is for anyone that runs or that wants to take up running – it is for all abilities. We’ll be releasing a bunch of initiatives that cater for all abilities – from our KICKSTRRT program that aims to encourage new runners and help them gain the confidence and know-how to run on their own; our FOOT SOLDIERS program which is really the next step and for those that wish to attempt their first fun run we’ll be eliminating everyone’s greatest fear (…coming last!); our Make Me A Marathoner program which will help take a number of locals through the preparation and training to achieve their first marathon. We’re also developing ways that experienced runners can connect more – through our training routes website pages and information, comprehensive website calendar and our TRR Angels program – which encourages experienced runners to pace particular times at local fun runs (which will be kicking off at Cadbury Marathons 2015!)
What makes running in Tasmania so special?
Tasmania is perfect for running – great climate, great roads and trails, and friendly locals….which means that a high-five from a complete stranger while you’re out for a run is not uncommon! We’re also lucky to have a number of great fun run events to choose from (see our calendar for a full list; http://www.tasmanianroadrunners.org.au/events-calendar/).
Where can people find you if they would like to find out more?
What’s your number 1 health & fitness tip?
Enjoying it is the most important thing – after all, this is what will help maintain consistency and motivation.
If you’re a runner or have been thinking about giving it a go the Tasmanian Road Runners website is a great place to start.
Be sure to say hi to them at the expo, they will be giving 2 presentations throughout the day for those wanting to find out more.
